The Artful Interlude

The Poppy Field near Argenteuil, 1873 by Claude Monet

Claude Monet painted this masterpiece in 1873 after settling in the French town of Argenteuil. The two pairs of figures in the painting are believed to be Monet’s wife, Camille, and their son, Jean. The work was featured at the very first Impressionist exhibition in 1874.

Rather than using fine detail, Monet used broad strokes of paint to capture the impression of light and colour. The painting uses two distinct colour zones: a vibrant red for the poppies and a bluish-green for the landscape.
